Writing Your Artist Statement

 Creating a Powerful Artist's Statement
Your artist's statement is your opportunity to share insights about your approach to your art. Keep it simple!

While your biography is your opportunity to tell your story, your artist's statement is your opportunity to share your philosophy about your work. Your Artist's statement should be brief - about 500 words. Avoid the temptation to make it too philosophical. Imagine you are talking to a collector about your work and explaining your motivation and technique. Use language that a collector would understand.
 
What to Include

 You may want to include the following in your artist's statement:
1.    What you are trying to say with your work.
2.    How your subject matter and style relate to your message.
3.    How you developed your technique.
4.    Factors in your life that lead you to create the work you do  (there may be some overlap from your biography here).
5.    How your work has developed over time.

Format
Your artist's statement should be written in first-person. You can keep the layout simple. Include a picture of yourself and a piece or two of your artwork if you wish. Consider getting professional help, if you are having trouble.

This is an eight-week progressive course designed to strengthen figure drawing skills and introduce oil painting materials and paint handling techniques. Using demonstrations, targeted exercises and individual attention, we’ll use oils to review the components of strong drawing skills for the first two classes, then we will paint for the remaining six classes of the course.

Because a strong figure painting is built on a strong drawing!

This course is appropriate for novice to intermediate skill levels. The course will stress observational skills and construction, rendering anatomy, and composition. We’ll explore how drawing relates to painting, color and value, the effects of light and shadow, tonal methods, various modeling techniques, and how to manage a palette and mix colors.

Beginning Watercolor - Step One

Have you always wanted to learn the technique of watercolor painting? 

Well here is your chance!

Sept 15, 22, 29 (two week break for WSO) Oct 20, 27, Nov 3, 10, 17
9:30am - 12:30pm for 8 sessions,
$200 for the 8 class session

Learn watercolor basics within your own unique vision in a supportive environment. Improve and refine your painting skills as you learn methods from mixing colors, applying washes, and using tones and values as compositional elements in your paintings.  We will begin with simple exercises designed to help you feel competent about your style and skill.  Watercolor – Beginning Step II and III will follow each quarter.

Basic supply list:

Watercolor Paper -  #140 Lb 100% cotton cold pressed – No Canson or Strathmore Papers!

Arches brand single sheets or blocks are best
 The instructor has watercolor paper to purchase by the sheet if preferred – arches 22” x 30”
                              - $6.50 per sheet (you can get 8 small paintings from one sheet)

•         Watercolor Pallet with lid or small folding pallet
•         Graphite Pencil (4H or 5H) and eraser (kneaded or Staedtler Mars)
•         Water Container
•         Small roll of paper towels and/or toilet paper
•         Drafting tape – not painters tape or masking tape
•         Artist Quality paint brushes-minimum of 3 (one of each kind), suggested sizes:
                    Round:  #8, #10
                    Flat:  #3/4”, #1”
                    Liner: #1, #00, #.10
•         Masonite Board for Stretching Paper and holding loose paper with drafting tape
•         Watercolor Paints – artist grade (not cottman or student grade)
                    M.Graham paints are suggested

We will discuss colors at class but for a minimum starting palette recommend:
          Gamboges
          Azo Yellow
          Quinnacradone Rose
          Phthalocyanine Blue
          Sap Green – Holbein brand is the best for this color
          Payne’s Grey

Friday August 19th from 1-4pm at Oregon Society of Artists. $25 drop-in fee.

Last week Joanne started a demo painting from previous outdoor paintings and this week she will continue. Class starts with a critique on what we all have been working on in previous classes.

The demo is informal and folks can continue painting while Joanne  talks through the demo. If you are new, just show up and we will get you going.
