First-Thursday Evening Demo,  Thursday, September 6, 7pm Joanne Mehl:  Color is Relative: Using a Warm and Cool Color Balance in the Alla Prima Portrait Mastering the warm/cool color relationships of light and shadow within alla prima portraits can evoke various moods and offer artists yet another valuable tool for creating an expressive painting. Working from a live model, Joanne Mehl will demonstrate mixing warm and cool colors to create the value patterns of the light and shadow areas.  Joanne will show you how to manipulate the warm/cool color relationship of these areas to suit your artistic purposes. Joanne Mehl is a fine artist with over 30 years of experience in painting figurative works in oil and gouache. She graduated with honors in illustration from Pasadena’s Art Institute. Specializing in portraiture, figure painting and equine subjects, much of her work is commissioned portraits, as well as various scenes offered for sale through her gallery or website. She currently teaches various classes at OSA.    Second-Thursday Daytime Demo,  Thursday, September 13, 11am    (Doors open for seating at 10am) Alan Scott-Moncrief:  Oil Painting Master Secrets Alan Scott-Moncrief During his presentation, Alan will demonstrate a proprietary oil painting technique he has developed over three decades that is uniquely suited to achieving bold, satisfying results in the field or studio. Armed with this exciting approach, students will quickly attain rewarding results and be inspired to tackle subjects they’d never previously have attempted.   Alan Scott-Moncrieff is a Scottish American painter and the grandson of renowned American illustrator, Keith Ward. Alan has painted, exhibited and taught in the US, Canada, Mexico, the UK and Asia since 1988 and nurtured numerous students on their path to becoming fulfilled artists.  Art without Passports Lecture Series,  Thursday, September 20, 6:30pm Greg Lewis:  The Art Critique: Beyond the Elements of Art When artists present their works for public exhibit, both the trained and untrained viewer sees and forms an opinion. Three forms of art criticism will be discussed, along with a presentation of known artworks to critique. We'll introduce the critique styles of the late Robert Hughes, controversial and opinionated art critic and historian and Sister Wendy Beckett, art historian for the BBC series: The Story of Painting. Together, we will explore beyond the elements of art and the principles of design to formulate our own critique vocabulary.  Join us for an evening of art critique! Creating Flesh Tones in the Alla Prima Portrait

Many artists struggle with creating convincing flesh tones in
portrait and figure paintings. Because human skin reflects light
and color, acute observation of warm and cool tones, and
subtleties in changes of hue are required, along with the ability
to group values, in order to successfully create the illusion of
living skin.

Working from the live model, Joanne Mehl will demonstrate
how to mix color to create a light and dark value pattern, and
how to observe and mix warm and cool flesh tones while
maintaining value groupings.

Joanne Mehl is a fine artist with over 30 years of experience
creating quality artwork for her clients. Specializing in
portraiture, figure painting and equine subjects, much of her
work is commissioned portraits of individuals, families, and the
animals they love; as well as various scenes offered for sale

If you want to give your paintings an edge with rich and glowing color, learn to glaze!

Masters such as Rembrandt, Rubens, Vermeer and Caravaggio painted in oils using glazing techniques. Glazes are thin, transparent layers of color applied over an opaque under-painting, which can create glowing depths of color. This nearly lost art is now finding renewed interest and usage within the current representational art renaissance.
 
In this 8-week class we will:
• Learn about color mixing using layers of color.
• Learn about relative transparency of paint tube colors.
• Learn about the principle of “Fat over Lean”.
• Create a Modello drawing and a lean, light valued under-painting for glazing.
• Learn about substrates and primers.
• Learn to make a classical recipe of Rabbit Skin Glue Gesso. (Trust me, you'll want to clearly label this yogurt-like substance at home.)
• Make our own finely textured panel using Rabbit Skin Glue Gesso.
 
The goal of this class is to give oil painters one more “wow”- factor tool in their artistic toolbox.  Glazing's rich techniques are easily seen in masterworks of the past, and are just as worthy and compelling today.

Alla Prima Portrait Painting in Oils,  Part 2 with Joanne Mehl

March 13th – April 17th, $240

Mondays, 9:30am – 12.30pm, downstairs studio

This six week course follows and builds on the introductory Jan/ Feb course, but anyone with basic skill in Alla Prima painting is welcome to join and learn more!

In the first course we focused on accuracy in drawing, value patters, and warm and cool color relationships as they pertain to flesh tones.  We will continue working on these aspects of Portraiture while introducing the following ideas:
1. Painting wet into wet using thicker paint and less solvent.
2. Exploring the effects created using brushes of different shapes and materials.
3. Using brushstrokes to help define form ("positioning")
4. Exploring additional textures such as dry brush, transparency and line.
5. Learning to control emphasis, using the amount of detail and value to direct the viewers gaze.
6. Finally, speeding up the process by determining which steps are nop longer necessary and leaving them out. 

Drop in students welcome, but the classes are sequential.

Alla Prima is a wet-into-wet oil painting technique where subjects are painted quickly and in one sitting. Alla Prima is widely used in plein air painting, here we’ll explore and exploit its strengths in doing portraiture with a live model.

Besides Alla Prima techniques, this eight-week progressive course will concentrate on strengthening head drawing skills for portraiture. With targeted exercises and individual attention, we’ll use oils to review the components of strong drawing skills for the first classes, and then paint for the remaining six classes.

A strong drawing leads to a strong painting!

This course is appropriate for novice to intermediate skill levels. It will stress observational skills and construction, rendering anatomy, and composition. We’ll explore how drawing relates to painting, color and value, the effects of light and shadow, tonal methods, various modeling techniques, and how to manage a palette and mix colors.
