FIRST THURSDAY DEMO:  Thursday, March 7, 7:00pm (doors open at 6:30pm) Free and open to the public Artist & Craftsman Supply demo Water-soluble Pastels Artist & Craftsman Supply

Get a little messy and try something new! This month’s demo will be hosted by the Artist & Craftsman Supply in SE Portland. Artist & Craftsman Supply is a 100% employee-owned company with two locations in Portland. This demo will focus on Neocolor II water-soluble wax based pastels, and Portfolio water-soluble oil pastels. Water-soluble pastels can be used on multiple types of surfaces, and even write on top of dry paint! They are great for loose sketches, decoupage, mix media paintings, and more. All members will be invited to try the pastels on multiple surfaces, ask questions about Artist & Craftsman, and enter a free raffle.

Spring Juried Show Ruth Armitage, Juror Our first juried show of 2019 is coming up in March, so it’s time to finish up your latest artwork! This is an OSA Members only show. Entry Fees: $25 for the 1st painting $30 for 2 paintings. No photography accepted in this show, and there is no specific theme. If collage is used, it must be original paint media on paper and done by the artist. Found items such as printed text, clippings, and or documents are not allowed. Please refer to OSA framing guidelines for juried shows. Adherence to these guidelines ensures your painting will be eligible for the juror to review your work. Ruth Armitage, Snug Spot

Following each demo, a short video will reveal how to move past the basics to a completed painting.

First-Thursday Evening Demo,  Thursday, September 6, 7pm Joanne Mehl:  Color is Relative: Using a Warm and Cool Color Balance in the Alla Prima Portrait Mastering the warm/cool color relationships of light and shadow within alla prima portraits can evoke various moods and offer artists yet another valuable tool for creating an expressive painting. Working from a live model, Joanne Mehl will demonstrate mixing warm and cool colors to create the value patterns of the light and shadow areas.  Joanne will show you how to manipulate the warm/cool color relationship of these areas to suit your artistic purposes. Joanne Mehl is a fine artist with over 30 years of experience in painting figurative works in oil and gouache. She graduated with honors in illustration from Pasadena’s Art Institute. Specializing in portraiture, figure painting and equine subjects, much of her work is commissioned portraits, as well as various scenes offered for sale through her gallery or website. She currently teaches various classes at OSA.    Second-Thursday Daytime Demo,  Thursday, September 13, 11am    (Doors open for seating at 10am) Alan Scott-Moncrief:  Oil Painting Master Secrets Alan Scott-Moncrief During his presentation, Alan will demonstrate a proprietary oil painting technique he has developed over three decades that is uniquely suited to achieving bold, satisfying results in the field or studio. Armed with this exciting approach, students will quickly attain rewarding results and be inspired to tackle subjects they’d never previously have attempted.   Alan Scott-Moncrieff is a Scottish American painter and the grandson of renowned American illustrator, Keith Ward. Alan has painted, exhibited and taught in the US, Canada, Mexico, the UK and Asia since 1988 and nurtured numerous students on their path to becoming fulfilled artists.  Art without Passports Lecture Series,  Thursday, September 20, 6:30pm Greg Lewis:  The Art Critique: Beyond the Elements of Art When artists present their works for public exhibit, both the trained and untrained viewer sees and forms an opinion. Three forms of art criticism will be discussed, along with a presentation of known artworks to critique. We'll introduce the critique styles of the late Robert Hughes, controversial and opinionated art critic and historian and Sister Wendy Beckett, art historian for the BBC series: The Story of Painting. Together, we will explore beyond the elements of art and the principles of design to formulate our own critique vocabulary.  Join us for an evening of art critique! APRIL WORKSHOPS Register for these and more upcoming workshops at oregonsocietyofartists.com Paint Like the Old Dutch Masters with Acrylic,  Wayne Jiang Thursday - Sunday, April 19 - 22 Take acrylic painting to the next level! Through a mixture of demos, hands-on painting sessions from photos or still life, you will learn Wayne Jiang’s unique acrylic glazing and layering techniques to paint like the old Dutch masters. Wayne Jiang You’ll learn how to create rich tones with a limited color palette and how to make the transition from oil or watercolor to acrylic. Topics and exercises include: layering in glazes, combining opaque and transparent painting, best practices for planning and preparation, preparing surfaces for acrylic, and how to use photo references correctly. Watercolor Batik on Rice Paper,  Kristie Mooney Friday- Sunday, April 27 - 29 Learn unique batik techniques on rice paper using watercolors and wax.  No experience necessary! Come away with a beautiful batik painting you can hang in your home.  Kristie will walk you through the batik process, step by step and help you create an original piece of art. Kristie has turned many art lovers into artists with this process. Kristie Mooney Kristie Mooney holds a BA in Clothing Textiles and Fine Arts from OSU.  She has studied with leading watercolor artists around the country and has won numerous awards for her work.  She is best known for her Watercolor Batiks and when asked to describe her process she explains, “When creating a Batik on rice paper I combine many colors and watch it mingle through the fibers of the rice paper. The wax is applied in layers and once I achieve the intensity of the color I’m looking for.  The entire painting is covered in wax. Next I carefully crinkle the wax and rice paper and run dyes through the cracks.
