Ellen White: Colored Pencil Tips and Techniques


Colored pencil is one of the most versatile mediums out there. There are many techniques one can use to achieve a variety of different effects and textures when creating a work of art. 

Ellen White will demonstrate some of these techniques ranging from methods of blending to the use of different substrates. You’ll be amazed at what can be created with one small set of tools!


Ellen is a pet portrait artist, focusing mainly on dogs and cats. She is a member of CPSA (Colored pencil Society of America) District Chapter 201, and currently serves as their Co-President, and Exhibitions Director. To see more of Ellen’s work, visit ellenoriginals.weebly.com

Chinese Brushwork with Lian Quan Zhen

Location: Upstairs Studio

Price: $ 60.00 Option to paint with materials Linda will provide. Add $ 25.00
This workshop offers a fresh approach for acrylic and collage artists.
Five demos will focus on step by step techniques, designed to develop
your mental and artistic courage.
Examples of new approaches for transparent collage papers,
controlling value gradation with a high density foam roller,
and expressive line making with sgraffito tools, are specifically designed for
artists ready to step up to a new level of creative expression.
Following each demo, a short video will reveal how to move past the basics
to a completed painting.
Artists will take a small example home, if they choose to “paint in the afternoon”.
Just add $25 at registration. Linda will set up stations with all necessary supplies.
All participants should dress, knowing they might be in the “splash zone”.

In this one-day Chinese painting session, students will learn how to use Chinese brushes, ink and colors, as well as Asian Art techniques. These techniques will help students paint any subject matter in a more free and spontaneous style.

VIBRANT NW LANDSCAPE AND ANIMALS IN WATERCOLOR
with Lian Quan Zhen
This workshop will go over the basic techniques of compositions and coloring, as well as Lian's unique methods of "Color Pouring and Blending" and "Paint Around (negative painting)". Lian will show how to mix paint on watercolor papers by using only three primary colors.

THE POWER OF DESIGN AND COLOR IN LANDSCAPE PAINTINGS
with Michael Orwick
Focus on the fundamentals of good painting.  Instructor will help simplify the painting process and show how to use a step-by-step method to create a successful painting.  Topics include: composition, value, design, choosing a subject, identifying and mixing accurate warm and cool colors, establishing a focal point, plus tips for studio and outdoor painting.  Workshop includes informal lectures, demonstrations, group critiques, and individual advice.

BOW: Beyond OSA Walls!

Oregon Society of Artists is proud to partner with PDX Jazz to host the 2019 PDX Jazz Album Cover Exhibition at Cedar Sinai Park, a local nonprofit assisted living center. Don’t miss the reception on Sunday, May 19th, 3-5pm at Cedar Sinai Park, 6140 SW Boundary St., Portland, OR 97221.
Jazz in the Schools, is an innovative program of PDX Jazz that teaches 3,000 students annually about jazz music’s most important contributors and its historical connection to visual art. Students discover how the visual art associated with jazz also played an important role in shaping culture of the 20th century. Students are given the assignment of creating their own original jazz album cover.
This partnership between Oregon Society of Artists, PDX Jazz and Cedar Sinai Park provides young artists the opportunities to express themselves artistically and allows for their talent to be showcased within a gallery setting.

Christen Waddell:  Portrait Sculpture
This demo will focus on the form of the human head. Chris will give 2D artists the tools to enhance their skills by gaining a better understanding of the form in real space. Graphic 3D artists will also enhance their skills by gaining a better understanding of the figure and 3-dimensional form.
Chris Waddell has been sculpting the figure for more than 2 decades. Waddell taught Classical sculpture in NYC at the Grand Central Academy of Art, and is an associate of the ICAA. His figures and portraits appear in private collections around the world and in international spaces including the National Mall in Washington D.C., the Canada Sports Hall of Fame and many others. He received his MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE FUNDAMENTALS OF BOTANICAL DRAWING
with Janet Parker
Students will learn techniques for drawing botanical subjects, realistically, in graphite. By using direct observation while looking up-close at live plants, students will break down their subjects into simplified forms to get a sense of how light-on-form works to create a sense of volume and accuracy in proportions.
