OSA 2019 SUMMER WORKSHOPS
This summer, OSA is offering an incredibly diverse selection of workshops taught by talented, nationally-acclaimed instructors. Our workshops are open to all skill levels and include various mediums including acrylic, oil, watercolor, pastel, and graphite/botanical.

Acrylic and Wire Drawing like Gustav Klimt with Karen Knutson
May 2-5 | 9:30am-4:30pm
Learning different textures is the theme of this workshop. Students will begin by preparing their papers in the Gustav Klimt painting method, dropping liquid acrylic on the paper, and then scraping it, using a credit card. students will develop these under-paintings into their choice of subjects.
An Introduction to the Fundamentals of Botanical Drawing with Janet Parker
May 18-19 | 10:00am-4:00pm
Students will learn techniques for drawing botanical subjects, realistically, in graphite. By using direct observation while looking up-close at live plants, students will break down their subjects into simplified forms to get a sense of how light-on-form works to create a sense of volume and accuracy in proportions.
Vibrant NW Landscape and Animals in Watercolor with Lian Quan Zhen
May 28-31 | 9:30am-4:30pm
This workshop will go over the basic techniques of compositions and coloring, as well as Lian's unique methods of "Color Pouring and Blending" and "Paint Around (negative painting)". Lian will show how to mix paint on watercolor papers by using only three primary colors.
In this one-day Chinese painting session, students learn how to use Chinese brushes, ink and colors, as well as theories of the Asian Art, and use the techniques to paint spontaneous style (not painting subjects like bamboo, chrysanthemum, orchid, nor plum blossom).
The Power of Design and Colors in Landscape Painting with Michael Orwick
June 8-9 | 9:30am-4:30pm
This workshop will help students simplify the painting process by using a step-by-step method to create a successful painting. Topics include: composition, value, design, choosing a subject, identifying and mixing accurate warm and cool colors, establishing a focal point, plus tips for studio and outdoor painting.
Landscape/Seascape Painting with Soft Pastels with Doug House
June 20-23 | 9:00am-4:00pm
This pastel workshop will teach students how to create different levels of distance within their plein air or photographed landscapes. House will give Individualized advice concerning color choice and composition. Students will complete at least one finished painting by the end of this workshop.
Beginners Guide to Pastel Painting with Susan Kuznitsky
July 21 | 9:30am-4:00pm
This one-day workshop is the perfect opportunity for artists who are curious about using pastel. It is a day to explore the joys of pastels to see if you want to dive in further. All you need to bring is a drawing board to accommodate a 9 x 12 piece of sanded pastel paper. All other supplies will be provide.
California Vibe in Watercolor with David Lobenberg
July 25-28 | 9:30am-4:30pm
Students will learn watercolor portraiture that goes beyond the norm with super expressive paint applications and wildly intense colors. ABSOLUTELY NO DRAWING EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY – You will work from photo references both provided by me and your own. A tracing technique will be utilized for all paintings.
Delicate to Dynamic in Watercolor with Vickie Nelson
August 3-4, 9:30 am - 4:00 pm
Every skill level is welcome in this workshop. Vickie will focus on negative painting, good design and the use of clean color. Come with your drawings already drawn on your watercolor paper. Paint what YOU love. Vickie will do demos morning and afternoon, leaving time for you to paint your wonderful creations.
