Five demos will focus on step-by-step techniques, designed to develop your mental and artistic courage. Examples of new approaches for transparent collage papers, controlling value gradation with a high density foam roller, and expressive line making with sgraffito tools are specifically designed for artists ready to step up to a new level of creative expression. Following each demo, a short video will reveal how to move past the basics to a completed painting. Artists will take a small example home, if they choose to “paint in the afternoon”. https://lindarothchildollisstudio.com Register Now! online registration Karen Knutson, Acrylic and Wire Drawing like Gustav Klimt May 2-5 | 9:30am-4:30pm Karen Knutson Learning different textures is the theme of this workshop. We will begin by preparing our papers in the Gustav Klimt painting method, dropping liquid acrylic on the paper, and then scraping it, using a credit card. We will develop these under-paintings into students' choice of subjects. Suggested subjects might be giraffes, dragonflies, or flowers, but students may pick whatever they want. One day, we will learn how to paint people, using the Gustav Klimt method. We will also be adding wire drawing to our paintings to bring them to completion. Wire Drawing is done using permanent black markers to look like a wire sculpture when completed. Abstract designs will be discussed and students will learn how wire drawings help ALL of their paintings be more complete and professional. Bring your favorite reference photos and get ready to loosen up! https://www.karenknutson.com/ Register Now! online registration Janet Parker, An Introduction to the Fundamentals of Botanical Drawing May 18-19 | 10:00am-4:00pm Janet Parker Students will learn techniques for drawing botanical subjects, realistically, in graphite. On the first day, we will cover the 5 basic principles for achieving realistic depictions of a plant specimen. We’ll go over the importance of understanding the roles of (1) value, or lights and darks; (2) breaking down our subjects into simplified forms; (3) getting a sense of how light-on-form works to create a sense of volume and the importance of the idea of a single light source in achieving this effect; (4) learning some ways to capture accurate proportions; and finally (5) using direct observation - looking up-close at our live plant specimen (or cutting) for information that can’t be gotten any other way. On the second day, we will work on creating a value study of our subject in graphite.* Note: On the second day, I’ll give a demonstration of a “grisaille” technique for working in colored pencil, where a value study is laid down lightly, in a dark colored pencil rather than graphite, and other colors are layered on top of that, to ultimately create a finished color rendering of the subject. *Some students may prefer to work in colored pencil on the second day, so there will be the option of creating the value study in a single dark colored pencil, and developing the drawing in color from that point. http://www.janetparker-art-design.com/ Register Now! online registration (503) 228-0706 | info@osartists.org

Creating light with something that is not plugged in? Why YES! Let Brenda show you how she acquires a luminous glow to her pastel paintings with the use of a colorful-filled under painting and sequential layering of hues and values. Brenda is a graduate of California Polytechnic University who began her creative career as a designer for high profile sportswear clients. Ten years later she made the leap to fine art and never looked back.

Inspired by the Impressionists, her color-filled pastels and oil paintings have gained national Signature recognition with the Pastel Society of America, Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, and the Northwest Pastel Society. Brenda’s work has been published in The Pastel Journal (cover story), Plein Air Magazine, The Art of Plein Air Painting, and The Best of America Pastel, and has her own signature line of Jack Richeson Pastels.

Revel in texture and color in this workshop exploring the properties of Cold Wax Medium. If you’ve been hesitant to get into oil painting because of the slow drying time, this class will teach you a different tune. No fuss cleanup, little odor and layering magic will seduce participants.

Join Ruth Armitage for a workshop inspired by nature, but leaning toward the abstract using cold wax medium along with oil paints. Learn how to create your own medium, layer opaque and transparent pigments, incise, build up and more.

Participants will work on multiple wood panels over the course of the workshop, culminating in several finished pieces.

Techniques will include different types of paint application, reductive and layering techniques, mark making, shape, color and texture galore.  Pre-planning and intuition will work hand-in-hand to lead artists to creative compositions.
An open and adventurous attitude and imagination are the only pre-requisites.
