ART WITHOUT PASSPORTS SERIES:  Thursday, August 16, 6:30pm "En Plein Air,"  Greg Lewis The French term En Plein Air, or "in the open air" refers to drawings and paintings that are completed on location outdoors. This presentation will explore the experience of what the eye sees and the heart and hand express. The act of painting outdoors has allured artists for centuries to heighten the visual senses, producing either a quick study painting, or a finished work of art. Among the notable plein-air artists are Claude Monet, Mary Cassatt, Winslow Homer, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Vincent Van Gogh, and Winston Churchill, just to name a few. IN THE GALLERY The OSA Gallery is free and open to the public:  Monday - Saturday, 1 - 4 pm plus special reception hours as announced in exhibit listings   First Annual Plein Air Portland Show juror:  Sarkis Antikajian continues through August 30 OSA's first annual exhibit focused on plein air painting,  featuring recent works created outdoors in Oregon and Washington. FIRST-THURSDAY EVENING DEMO:  August 2, 7:00pm "Perspective in Plein Air Painting," Ken Klos

OSA member Ken Klos will share his plein-air painting knowledge, focusing on perspective. Ken is a senior project architect and project designer, licensed in the states of Oregon and California. He knows his perspective! During this demo, he will show how to apply this know-how in setting up a plein air painting.

Doors open with informal critique session at 6:30 pm, Demo at 7:00 pm

SECOND-THURSDAY DAYTIME DEMO:  August 9, 11:00am "Collage Storytelling," Colin Manning

Colin Manning will give an introduction to his medium’s potential for storytelling, personal expression, and social commentary. In the spirit of exploration, he'll show how his collage subject emerges by searching through magazines and books to find images that speak to him.

Colin received his BFA in Painting and his MFA in Filmmaking, both from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1998 and 2000. Through a technique of collage and painting applied “backwards” to glass and plexiglass, Manning conjures up a dynamic confluence of the transcendent and mundane.

"FROM PLEIN AIRE TO STUDIO" 
DRAWING AND PAINTING FROM NATURE!
Plein Aire, Alla Prima & Studio Practice-all 2d. media welcome! WEDNESDAY MORNING CLASSES 9:30AM. TO 12:30PM.

Learning to draw, paint & design from life is an ongoing inspiration & practice. We will paint & draw outside when possible, bring nature into the studio for Still Life and move into the Character Figure when the rains come. As always, students maintain an Artists Journal-sketching, writing, etc. This 8 week course will cover a variety of materials, techniques, color study & surfaces to give you the basics and a NEW portfolio of your own art & ideas. Those who wish to learn to paint in oils are welcome and encouraged!
From here larger projects are possible.

Dates:  Sept. 14, 21, 28…Oct. 5, 12, 19, 26…Nov. 2 (future dates TBA) Cost for this series: $240.00 (drop in $35.00)

Instructor
Nancy Smith Klos is an award winning painter who has lived in the NW since 1985. From 1990 to 2005 her French Pictorial tapestries were commissioned by a national clientele and featured on OPB's ArtBeat & HGTV's Modern Masters. In 2016 Nancy was the Artist-In Residence at The Lan Su Chinese Garden in Portland, Oregon. This two month show was also a two year retrospective of her paintings in Sumi-E ink and oils. This show was written up by NYC Arts Writer Bob Bahr and featured twice in Plein Air and OutDoor Painter Magazine. "She Paints Plein Aerial".
