NEW UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

OIL & COLD WAX with Lisa Mann December 14-15, 2019 | 9:30am - 4pm In this 2 day intensive and interactive workshop Lisa  will introduce the process of using oil and cold wax to create meaningful paintings through layering, textures, color, and visual storytelling. In addition to the  techniques of working in oils and cold wax medium, we will also cover the fundamentals of abstract art elements to help you evaluate your work. Don't miss Lisa's FREE demonstration on December 12, 11am - 12pm. this demo will introduce the same principals as this workshop.

PROCREATE - ANALOG PAINTING; DIGITAL EXPERIMENTATION with Ruth Armitage January 25-27, 2020 | 9:00am - 4pm Learn how digital exploration can expand your painting process. You’ll use the Procreate app and an iPad to plan and alter works in progress. Learn to use this inexpensive app to try out ideas before you execute them in paint. Ruth will begin the workshop with instruction on using the app to draw, paint, and use layers to experiment on photos of paintings in process.

You’ll then work on your own projects in your choice of water-based media. Acrylic, watercolor, and mixed media are all welcome. The process of using Procreate encourages growth and exploration. It is an excellent visualization tool for new and advanced artists. Please bring an iPad with a current version of Procreate. An Apple Pencil or stylus is also helpful.

PALS at OSA February 1 - 6 artists from Albertina Kerr Albertina Kerr’s Portland Art & Learning Studio (PALS) is an art center for adults with developmental disabilities, fostering creative growth and promoting an awareness of the cultural contributions from people of all abilities. UP NEXT IN THE GALLERY The Artists of IdeAL - PDX at OSA February 14 - March 4 Opening Reception: Saturday, February 16,  4 - 6pm Open to the Public OSA welcomes fifteen artists from IdeAL-PDX in this 4th annual exhibit. IdeAL - PDX is a collaboration among Latino Artists of the Northwest who come together to participate with different local organizations such as Oregon Society of Artists to show their work and the strength of relationships between colleagues. Our first juried show of 2019 is coming up in March. It’s time to finish those paintings for OSA’s Spring Show!  This is a members-only show. There is no specific theme, and no photography is allowed. Entry Fees: $25 for first painting, $30 for two paintings OSA is pleased to announce Ruth Armitage as our Spring Show Juror. Ruth is a Signature member of many prestigious National Watercolor Societies, including NWS, RMNW, SDWS, NWWS, WFWS, CWA and WW. She is a Past President of the Watercolor Society of Oregon (WSO) and a recipient of their Outstanding Service Award. She was a popular instructor at OSA for several years. Last Fall, Ruth was the Juror for the 2018 ISEA (International Society of Experimental Artists) Member Show held in Oregon. Most recently she earned a top award in the 95th National Watercolor Society Annual Exhibition, and was included in the 149th Annual American Watercolor Society Exhibition in New York. Ruth Armitage Cold Wax Workshop

Revel in texture and color in this workshop exploring the properties of Cold Wax Medium. If you’ve been hesitant to get into oil painting because of the slow drying time, this class will teach you a different tune. No fuss cleanup, little odor and layering magic will seduce participants.

Join Ruth Armitage for a workshop inspired by nature, but leaning toward the abstract using cold wax medium along with oil paints. Learn how to create your own medium, layer opaque and transparent pigments, incise, build up and more.

Participants will work on multiple wood panels over the course of the workshop, culminating in several finished pieces.

Techniques will include different types of paint application, reductive and layering techniques, mark making, shape, color and texture galore.  Pre-planning and intuition will work hand-in-hand to lead artists to creative compositions.
An open and adventurous attitude and imagination are the only pre-requisites.

How do artists move between realism and abstraction? Using subject matter to create art that is expressive and creative doesn’t mean giving up realism altogether. There is a wide spectrum between realism and non-objective work. Where are you most comfortable? Maybe you’re ready to push yourself to the next level with your painting.

Join Ruth Armitage for an in-depth exploration of design and creativity in painting. Refine your visual language and experiment with simple exercises for unleashing creative potential. Discover ways to generate new ideas, and where to start on your journey to painting with stronger design.

You’ll learn how to translate your ideas using both the elements & principles of design and improve your ‘mental game’ in art-making. Using your choice of media, we will explore shape, line, color and texture to craft vibrant paintings that stir the emotions.

Meet Ruth Armitage:

Ruth Armitage  is a signature member of the  National Watercolor Society , Rocky Mountain National Watermedia, California Watercolor Association and the Northwest Watercolor Society, and Past President of the Watercolor Society of Oregon. The Watercolor Society of Oregon has awarded her its Outstanding Service Award. She is currently planning a large joint exhibition between the Watercolor Society of Oregon and the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies.

Ruth’s work has received many local and national awards, including the Loa Ruth Sprung Award in the National Watercolor Society’s 95th Annual Exhibition.

Inclusion in numerous national publications and exhibitions has led to wide-spread recognition for Ruth. You may have seen her work profiled on Oregon Public Broadcasting’s “Oregon Art Beat.” Most recently Acrylic Artist Magazine ran a 10-page feature article in their Spring 2016 issue.

You can find Ruth’s work in Portland at the Portland Art Museum’s Rental Sales Gallery, and at Mary Lou Zeek gallery in Salem, Oregon. She is a gifted  instructor and has juried several local and state exhibitions. She enjoys sharing the creative process in the classroom and watching lightbulbs come on in her students’ eyes.
