Illuminated Lettering

Faith Emerson shares her passion for art and art history by guiding her students through Roman letter construction in her newest class, "The Renaissance White Vine Initial Capital". Students will explore these elegant letters inspired by Ottonian manuscripts and create their own unique capital.

Faith is a professional calligrapher, and holds a BFA in Drawing as well as an MA in Art History. Her wealth of knowledge allows her to offer her students a unique learning experience.  The four week course will meet each Thursday beginning on October 30th from 1:30-4:00pm. Cost is $105 for the four week session.

Shape Shifters With Ruth Armitage

Last night's fall demo was painter, Ruth Armitage. She did a wonderfully expressive watercolor based on her topic, "Shape Shifters."  Taking the pun from 'Trekys,' Shape shifting is an important composition builder, intentional or not!
Join Ruth in the OSA studio Wednesday mornings for a challenging painting assignment, critique, and informative demo.  There will be time left for painting in each three hour class (9:30am - 12:30.)  September class subjects will be based on 'shape' but if you want a term syllabus  please check out Ruth's website/blog here .

Come Paint with Michael Orwick!

Painting Light and Atmosphere. Painting classes start in February on the 6th*.

Thursday mornings 9:30 AM to 12:30 with a $20 drop in fee. Michael Orwick works in oil, but acrylic painters, watercolor painters and pastel artists are welcome. The essentials of painting; design, value structure, color and how to use the paint are the focus of this class.
Bring in a project you would like help and feedback on or feel free to paint along with Michael as he demonstrates and discusses the fundamentals of painting. All levels welcome.
Michael offers a practical approach that focuses on the three key practices of landscape painting: simplification and massing, composition, and color. You will learn how to control light, key your paintings and create good value structures so that you can achieve the specific feeling or mood you are after to fill your paintings with light and energy.
Working from your own photo reference, you will learn how to redesign the elements of the photo to create a more dynamic and compelling painting. Demonstrations, critiques and discussion of materials, techniques and common problems will be a part of this on going class. This class also covers the nuts and bolts of color, color relationships and how to paint the effect of light and its color as it influences your subjects.
The main focus is on oil painting, however all media are welcome.

*These classes are the 1st, 3rd and 4th Thursday with Free painting demonstrations and talks by different artists on the 2nd Thursday of every month.

Snow!!

"Dave McBride's painting above of Columbia Slew and Mt Hood"

No meeting on First Thursday, February 6th!

Unfortunately, it doesn't take more than an inch or two of Snow in Portland to make a trip to OSA not worth the risk.  Hopefully, we can reschedule Dave McBride's art talk to a day of more favorable weather. Stay home. Stay safe.

Instructor Kudos

Oregon Society of Artists member and instructor, Rene Eisenbart, was accepted in the National Watercolor Society's (NWS) open show this fall.  Her accepted painting below; 'Raven Dreams,' led the panel of jurists to consider her for signature membership by submitting three additional pieces for jurying.  We proudly announce Rene has been accepted into signature membership of NWS.
(signature status is indicated by the artist on her work with a NWS following her name on future paintings)
To look for Rene's current (Tuesday) class, look on the Oregon Society of Artists website here .

Art in the Pearl

President William Woods and Jenny Chen - volunteer

Oregon Society of Artists was a sponsor this year at Art in the Pearl.  Maybe you saw our full page add in the catalog. Not only that, we had a double booth staffed with people to answer questions and give info on just how easy it is to become a member of OSA.  Barbara Mc Donald, a creative and organizational mogul kept a stream of Painting demonstrations flowing before our visitors.  Enjoy the slide show below; see how our interactive demonstrations are just a taste of what can be found in the new fall classes.  Of course, thanks to all the volunteers.  We couldn't do it without you!
